Worship & Music Commission

The Worship and Music Commission at First Presbyterian Church is an active commission that is entrusted with the task of assisting the pastor in preparing for worship services. These services include Sunday morning worship, Maundy Thursday worship which includes a Maundy Thursday meal in our fellowship hall where we celebrate communion followed by a Tenebrae service in our sanctuary, 2 Easter morning services and 2 Christmas Eve services. The chancel choir director, bell choir director and organist are all active members of this commission. Together we try to bring the Word to life for our congregation.

In addition to these special services the commission also helps prepare for special Sunday services such as Christ the King Sunday, the 4 Sundays in Advent, Reformation Sunday, Epiphany Sunday and Pentecost Sunday. It is a joy and sometimes a challenge to find unique ways to bring the story of these special Sundays to our congregation. We strive to bring the story to life in a way that not only explains but also puts the meaning into a personal life perspective; something that our congregation can take hold of and apply to their daily lives. This can be challenging at times but is always rewarding!

This commission is also responsible for the weekly tasks that go along with each Sunday's worship service, from making sure the microphone is turned on to finding communion servers, there is always something to be done!

There are many volunteers each Sunday that help enrich our service. Ushers greet each person at the entrances of the church, help them find a seat and give them any other necessary information. The Worship Assistant enters the service with the pastor and participates in as little or as much as they are comfortable with, usually they open the service with the announcements, leads the congregation in a responsive opening and blesses the offering. Communions servers assist the pastor with Communion which is currently celebrated every other week. Communion servers are to be ordained Elders or Deacons. If someone feels the call to serve communion that is not ordained the Session must first vote to accept their service.

If you feel called to participate in the worshipping life of our congregation there are always opportunities from the above mentioned to special readings, submission of poetry, participation in a skit, singing in the chancel choir, upcoming contemporary choir or bell choir. Please feel free to contact the current Worship & Music chair person or contact the church office at 263-2047.
